This collaborative effort involves the Government of Maldives and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and is part of the Greater Male’ Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project.

The C&D processing plant, scheduled to be operational by the third quarter of 2024, is a component of the broader effort to improve environmental conditions and waste management in the Greater Male’ area.

Furthermore, the design adheres to international climate and disaster resistance standards established by the ADB.

Covering an area of 39,000 square feet within the Thilafushi Regional Waste Management Facility, the plant’s scope includes design and installation of the C&D processing plant. This encompasses not only the processing machinery but also the concrete platform and superstructures.

CSCEC will also provide spare parts for its operation over the next two years. Additionally, employees of the Waste Management Corporation Maldives (WAMCO) will receive training to enhance their technical capacity to operate the facility effectively.

In order to assess the importance of setting up this facility, the government engaged the services of the British engineering consulting company, Mott McDonald, to conduct a comprehensive study on construction waste management in the Maldives spanning from 2019 to 2021.

The study revealed an increase in the production of construction and demolition waste within the country, with the potential for recycling. The most recent data indicates that the daily volume of construction and demolition waste transported to Thilafushi has surged by over 200 tonnes.
