Independent presidential candidate Umar Naseer has unveiled a proposal that would require every male school graduate to serve in the army for a mandatory one-and-a-half-year period, minimum.

Naseer made this announcement during a presidential debate held last night, emphasising the decline in moral standards among the youth and the need to shape the future generation of the Maldives.

In his address, Naseer argued that in order to chart a new course for the Maldives, it is imperative to nurture an active, diligent, and skilled next generation. To achieve this, he intends to introduce compulsory national service for all male school leavers under his government’s purview.

Under this proposed policy, every young man completing their education in the Maldives would be obligated to serve a minimum of six years in the national army. Naseer cited the significant role that National Service plays in the development of smaller nations and stressed the importance of diverting youth from activities that do not contribute positively to their development.

Naseer stated, “Currently, our children are often engrossed in television and video games after school. We need to channel their energy into constructive activities. After completing their education, every young man must undertake national service, a commitment of at least six years in the army. This is the path to building an active, diligent, and morally upright generation.”

During the debate, Naseer also reaffirmed his commitment to political tolerance and pledged not to imprison individuals due to their political differences. He outlined his plans to address critical societal issues, including combating the drug epidemic and enhancing public safety.
