The Democrats presidential candidate Ilyas Labeeb unveiled a key aspect of the party’s housing policy, emphasising that the sole criterion for eligibility in housing projects would be reaching the age of 18.

Ilyas stressed that housing is a right that should be given to everyone and not a right that should be given only when someone has fallen to hard times.

This clear and straightforward approach represents a core element of The Democrats’ housing policy, as outlined in their manifesto. The party’s plan includes the construction of council housing in every island across Maldives, aimed at providing free, temporary accommodation to low-income families.

Additionally, the manifesto promises educational and training programs to uplift the living conditions of such families, coupled with economic initiatives.

Furthermore, The Democrats advocate for housing to be recognised as a fundamental right, along with facilitating easy access to financing options for housing construction and purchases.

Highlighting their commitment to addressing urban housing challenges, The Democrats have proposed an initiative to provide housing for 25,000 families within the city during the first five years of their government.

This initiative falls under The Democrats’ Green City program, which aims to relocate families residing in the city’s ten most congested blocks to newly constructed condominium units in five new areas.
