President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of the Maldives has not agreed to cede any part of Maldivian territory to Mauritius, according to the Bar Council of the Maldives.

This revelation comes as a result of a thorough investigation conducted by a three-member law review committee from the Bar Council.

The investigation centers around the disputed region between the Maldives and the Chagos Archipelago. In the course of this inquiry, President Solih provided the letter he had sent to the Prime Minister of Mauritius prior to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) delivering its decision on the case. The committee has also received all relevant documents pertaining to the matter.

Further scrutiny was conducted by the General Counsel of the Bar Council, who personally visited the President’s Office to verify the contents of the letter.

After careful examination, the Bar Council has determined that the letter does not contain any communications that could have influenced the outcome of the case or resulted in the Maldives losing any part of its ocean territory.

Presently, the Bar Council is in the process of compiling a comprehensive report based on its investigation. This report will include the council’s conclusion regarding whether the government provided a comprehensive defense that favored the interests of the Maldives in the case.
