Former President Mohamed Nasheed has taken to social media to encourage supporters and members of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to exercise their voting rights in favor of The Democrats’ presidential candidate, Ilyas Labeeb.

In a tweet, Nasheed expressed his belief that an alternative approach is needed for this election, suggesting that this change can only be achieved by bidding farewell to the status quo. Consequently, he urged PPM members and supporters to cast their votes in support of Ilyas Labeeb.
It’s noteworthy that President Nasheed has advocated for a second term for the current President and presidential candidate of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ibrahim Mohamed Solih but has clarified that this appeal is not for his own re-election bid.
The opposition candidates have voiced strong objections, alleging that President Solih has violated the Constitution and betrayed the nation, thus arguing against his bid for a second term. In contrast, President Solih contends that previous governments have let down the people, and the populace is not inclined to return to previous injustices.
Furthermore, it should be noted that Nasheed has parted ways with the MDP and established a new political entity in pursuit of victory in the upcoming election.
