Member of the Male’ City Council, Ahmed Zameer, has announced his affiliation with the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), marking a departure from his previous alignment with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Zameer, who is currently serving his third term in the City Council, cited his admiration for Male’ City Mayor, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, as a key factor behind his decision to join the PPM. Mayor Muizzu is set to contest the upcoming presidential election under the People’s National Congress’ (PNC) ticket, and Zameer expressed confidence in his ability to deliver substantial results if elected as the president.

This move follows a period of political upheaval within the MDP, during which Zameer was perceived as supporting Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who subsequently left the MDP to establish a new political entity known as The Democrats.

Out of the 19 councilors, including the mayor, ten now align themselves with the PPM, reshaping the political landscape within the council.
