The presidential election, which commenced at 8:00 am today, has seen the culmination of the voting phase, with the focus now shifting towards the meticulous process of counting the ballots.
Throughout the day, citizens exercised their right to vote, casting their ballots until the polls closed at 4:00 p.m.
This year, a substantial total of 282,395 eligible voters participated in the democratic process. Notably, this figure includes over 27,000 new voters who joined the electoral roll.
A widespread network of 574 polling stations was established both within Sri Lanka and abroad. Beyond the nation’s borders, ballot boxes were stationed in five countries: Colombo, Sri Lanka; Trivandrum, India; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; London, UK; and Dubai, UAE.
Furthermore, a unique aspect of this election was the placement of ballot boxes at 65 resorts and five correctional facilities.
To ensure a smooth and timely counting process, provisions were made to expedite the tallying of votes from any empty queues by 4:00 pm.
As a result, preliminary results from several ballot boxes have already been disclosed, indicating the anticipation that surrounds this presidential election.
