The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has taken decisive action to suspend a People’s National Congress (PNC) and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) observer and a representative affiliated with a political party for their involvement in insulting foreign observers during the first round of the presidential election.

This stern response comes in the wake of an incident where certain international observers, who had been invited by the ECM to oversee the presidential election proceedings, were subjected to derogatory remarks.

The suspension meted out by the ECM carries substantial consequences, as those affected will be barred from participating as observers, monitors, representatives, or election officials in the upcoming second round of elections and the two significant electoral events on the horizon.

Ismail Habeeb, Vice Chairman of the ECM, emphasised the seriousness of the situation, indicating that the commission has made arrangements to replace the two suspended individuals with new representatives from the same political party.
