Haven’t Paid Congestion Charge Since 2008, Reveals Maldives in UK

MV+ News Desk | September 17, 2023

In a recent development, Maldives has officially declared that it has not paid the London Congestion Charge since the change of government in 2008.

This decision raises questions about whether successive governments should be obligated to pay such charges, considering the diplomatic status of their missions in London.

Citing international law, Maldives asserts that they cannot be compelled to pay the London Congestion Charge during their diplomatic missions in the UK.

This stance is firmly rooted in the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, which outline the privileges and immunities granted to foreign missions and consular posts.

Notably, Maldives is not alone in its refusal to pay this charge. Among the 85 countries around the world that share a similar stance, India stands out as one of them. The rationale behind this collective objection is that the London Congestion Charge is perceived as a tax rather than a fee for services rendered.
