Everyday is an Opportunity to Reduce Ocean Plastics, Says MOPA & Coca-Cola
Male’ Aerated Water Company, the local partner of Coca-Cola in the Maldives, and its collaborator, the Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance (MOPA), said every day is a coastal clean-up day, and an opportunity to reducing ocean plastics to create ‘Trash Free Seas’ as signified by the International Coastal Clean-up Day.
On this coastal day, they released a statement highlighting their ongoing efforts towards achieving cleaner oceans and a healthier environment.
Since 2021, Coca-Cola Maldives, in conjunction with MOPA, has embarked on a series of initiatives aimed at the collection and recycling of PET plastic bottles, renowned for their 100% recyclable and versatile nature.
Over the past two and a half years, Coca-Cola Maldives has amassed more than 200,000 kilograms of PET bottles, effectively diverting them from landfills and the ocean—an effort in harmony with the aspirations of International Coastal Clean-up Day to achieve ‘Trash-Free Seas.’
Coca-Cola Maldives and MOPA are pooling their resources and expertise in pursuit of three significant projects designed to foster a circular economy for plastic and cleanse our oceans, thus enabling marine life to ‘Sea The Change.’
The ‘Reverse PET Collection Project’ collects PET bottles from Male, Hulhumale, and Addu city, shipping them abroad for recycling, amassing 150,000 kilograms of waste since 2021, also providing income for locals. The ‘Island PET Collection Project’ covers four inhabited islands, gathering 60,000 kilograms of waste in the first half of this year while promoting proper waste management and recycling awareness.
The projects provide income opportunities to local people, especially women and youth, who are involved in collecting, sorting and transporting PET bottles. The projects also educate people about the benefits of recycling and inspires them to take action for a cleaner and greener future.
