Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has submitted yet another request for an extension of his medical leave, as he continues to seek additional time for ongoing treatment in Singapore.
Adeeb initially arrived in Singapore on July 12 to undergo medical tests that were unavailable in the Maldives, according to the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS). His initial 10-day medical treatment period was originally scheduled to conclude on July 22 but was subsequently extended by the MCS until August 28.
Following this extension, the deadline was once again pushed to September 15. As the most recent deadline has now passed, Adeeb has requested a further extension from the MCS, although the exact duration of this extension request remains undisclosed.
The MCS has confirmed the receipt of Adeeb’s request for an extension of his medical leave and has indicated that it is currently under review. It should be noted that the correctional service possesses the authority to grant extensions to the medical leave of prisoners if they are unable to receive the necessary treatment within the initially allocated timeframe.
The Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), the political party associated with former Vice President Adeeb, has stated that he travelled to Singapore for treatment of a life-threatening neurological condition based on the advice of multiple doctors from different hospitals.
Adeeb had been sentenced to a 20-year prison term in October 2020 in connection with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement and money laundering scandal. However, due to his deteriorating health, he was subsequently transferred to house arrest.
