In a significant development within the House of Representatives, the majority party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has confirmed its commitment to expedite proceedings related to The Democrats’ proposed resolution concerning a potential transition to a parliamentary system of governance, according to Speaker Nasheed.
The impetus for this decision arose from concerns expressed by Nasheed, who highlighted that several critical parliamentary activities had encountered delays due to the absence of certain MDP members during today’s session. Nasheed, in particular, referred to the urgency surrounding the parliamentary resolution.
Nasheed disclosed that Medhu Henveiru MP Ali Azim, the Leader of The Democrats Parliamentary Group, had approached him with a request to fast-track the resolution. Nasheed also revealed that he had consulted with Mohammed Aslam, Majority Leader, and MDP Parliamentary Group Leader, regarding this matter.
Once the majority and minority leaders reach a consensus on this matter, the resolution pertaining to the systemic vote will be scheduled for debate tomorrow.
The Democrats’ resolution, which was tabled by Ilyas Labeeb, calls for a confidential vote on the choice of government system before November 30th of this year.
