The most fish found belong to the triggerfish family.
EPA Director General Ibrahim Naeem, in a statement given to “Mihaaru” news media, confirmed that the unsettling sight has been observed across several atolls, including Noonu Atoll, Raa Atoll, Baa Atoll, and Laamu Atoll.
However, as of now, the EPA has been unable to pinpoint the exact cause behind this event.
Naeem pointed out that fish typically succumb to factors such as disease or high water temperatures.
This recent event brings to mind a similar incident that occurred in 2007, when a significant number of fish washed up on islands in Dhaalu Atoll and Meemu Atoll. At that time, investigations revealed that the fish deaths were attributed to the proliferation of harmful algae.
