In a significant development in the run-up to the presidential election’s second round, The Democrats have unveiled a resolution outlining their conditions for forming a coalition with the two remaining candidates.
The resolution was introduced by Council Member Mohamed Shifaz during a Democrats’ council meeting convened at Billabong High International School yesterday.
Under the terms laid out in the resolution, both the Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the People’s National Congress’ (PNC) presidential candidate, and the primary-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) must meet specific criteria to secure The Democrats’ support.
For the PNC candidate, the conditions primarily revolve around the allocation of government positions to members of The Democrats and the implementation of select policies during their potential rule. It is stipulated that an agreement must be reached and finalised before the deadline of September 20.
In contrast, MDP is required to commit to holding a referendum on transitioning the governance system from a presidential to a parliamentary one. This referendum is expected to be conducted before the 28th of this month, ahead of the second round of voting.
Furthermore, the resolution underscores that The Democrats will withhold their support from any candidate unless both contenders consent to these terms.
