The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), yesterday, has decided to support the opposition coalition’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in the upcoming second round of the presidential election.
This decision comes after the MDA had previously supported the ruling party’s candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in the initial round of the election.
The decision to back Muizzu was reached during a meeting of the MDA’s national council held last night. The council members considered three options: continuing support for President Solih, endorsing Muizzu for the second round, or abstaining from supporting any candidate.
The outcome of the council meeting was as follows:
– Two members voted not to support any candidate.
– Two members opted to continue supporting President Solih.
– A substantial majority of 33 council members voted in favour of endorsing Muizzu as their preferred candidate for the second round.
Addressing reporters at a news conference following the council meeting, Ali Mauroof, the vice-president of the MDA, revealed that the decision to support Muizzu gained momentum due to the first-round results, which showed considerable support for Muizzu, surpassing the incumbent President Solih.
Mauroof also highlighted a factor that influenced their decision, stating that the lack of coalition support for President Solih in the second round posed an obstacle to his chances of winning the election.
He further pointed out that many council members observed growing support for Muizzu within the electorate.
He concluded by emphasising the MDA was formed to serve the country, which led them to rally behind a coalition with Muizzu by a substantial margin, as determined by the National Assembly.
