Voting Has Begun for the Second Round of the Presidential Election 2023

Voting is currently in progress in the Maldives for the second round of the presidential election 2023, signifying a pivotal moment in the country’s political landscape.

The polls officially opened at 8:00 am and are scheduled to remain accessible to voters until 5:00 pm.
The electoral contest highlights two candidates: Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, representing the People’s National Congress (PNC) as candidate number 4, and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the presidential candidate of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) as candidate number 3.
In the initial round of the presidential election held on September 9, Dr. Muizzu emerged as the frontrunner with a significant 46.06% of the vote, while President Solih secured 39.05%, establishing themselves as the primary contenders for the runoff.
In the second round of the presidential election, the eligible voter count has risen to 282,804, exceeding the 282,395 voters in the initial round. To accommodate this increase, 285,631 ballot papers have been meticulously printed, as opposed to 285,219 in the first round.
Additionally, the number of deployed ballot boxes has increased to 586, compared to the 574 used in the first round.
Furthermore, the ECM has placed ballot boxes in five countries for this year’s presidential election. Polling stations have been established in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Trivandrum (India), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and London (United Kingdom).
