The European Union (EU) Election Observation Mission has called upon Maldives to take proactive steps in promoting increased participation of women in the nation’s political landscape.
During a press conference today, Deputy Chief Observer Ms. Anne Marlborough highlighted the concerning lack of prominence of women’s voices in the political discourse. She noted that their participation has been disproportionately lower compared to other demographics.
Ms. Marlborough underscored a notable absence of women as presidential candidates in today’s and previous elections, and she emphasised the significance of granting political rights to women in the Maldivian context.
Furthermore, she stressed the importance of fostering broad civil society engagement within the political process. This, she noted, would contribute to a more inclusive and representative democratic system.
The EU Election Observation Mission’s appeal seeks to encourage the Maldives to take substantive steps towards achieving gender equality and inclusivity in its political arena, aligning with international standards and principles of democratic governance.
