Former president and current speaker, Mohamed Nasheed, has lauded the efforts of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, for his dedication during the presidential campaign.
Nasheed, who departed from the MDP to form The Democrats along with senior party members, expressed his admiration for President Solih’s campaign.
In the presidential election’s second round, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, representing the Peoples National Congress (PNC), emerged victorious. In a response to his defeat, President Solih extended his congratulations to Muizzu.
Following the confirmation of Muizzu’s win, Nasheed urged MDP members and supporters not to engage in derogatory comments or actions towards the newly elected president.
The formation of The Democrats stemmed from Nasheed’s unsuccessful bid in the MDP presidential primary. Throughout the campaign, Nasheed had expressed strong criticisms and leveled accusations against both the MDP and President Solih.
In the initial round of elections, The Democrats nominated Ilyas Labeeb as their candidate. However, in the second round, they opted not to endorse either the MDP or the PPM/PNC.
The Democrats have passed a resolution proposing a shift towards a parliamentary system of governance. This resolution has been submitted to the Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM), which has scheduled a parliamentary vote for the 29th of this month.
President Solih has indicated that the MDP will decide on its stance regarding the general vote after the parliamentary election.
