Following Mohamed Muizzu’s election as President for a five-year term, discussions on introducing a parliamentary system have surged, with Economic Minister Fayyaz voicing reservations and stressing the significance of respecting the people’s will.

Fayyaz, a key figure in the government, has firmly stated his opposition to the immediate implementation of a parliamentary system. He remarked, “The people have exercised their democratic right and elected their leader for the next five years. The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) should not be seen as attempting to overturn the people’s decision.”

Instead, Fayyaz stressed the need for the MDP to focus on upholding democratic principles within the new government. “Our priority should be ensuring that the people continue to have the freedom to choose their leaders in the future,” he added.

It is worth noting that former President Nasheed has consistently advocated for a parliamentary system as a condition for his support in the second round of the elections. However, negotiations between the various parties failed to reach a consensus on this matter.

The issue has now been passed to the Maldives’ parliament, which has passed a resolution supporting a parliamentary system and sent it to the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM).

Nevertheless, the recent electoral defeat has led to some MDP supporters expressing reluctance to endorse the parliamentary system.
