The central issue on the agenda was the letter sent by the Election Commission of the Maldives Election Commission (ECM) concerning the parliamentary resolution to hold a referendum on altering the current government system in the Maldives.
The scheduled meeting failed to reach the required quorum, with only 15 members present at the start of today’s session. The presidency extended the waiting period by an additional 15 minutes in hopes of attaining the necessary 22 members to initiate the session.
Mohamed Nasheed, the Speaker of the House, expressed his confusion and concern over the absence of members in today’s parliamentary gathering.
Nasheed has highlighted the ongoing challenge of achieving a quorum in the parliament.
Meanwhile, amidst the parliamentary deliberations, a proposed amendment to the Constitution has surfaced. Maafannu North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inti) introduced a motion suggesting that if an abstention vote is cast before the bill is approved, no further vote would be required.
Currently, the Maldivian constitution mandates that any alteration to the government system can only proceed after a constitutional amendment bill is both passed by parliament and subsequently approved by the president.
The parliament had previously adopted a resolution advocating for a shift to a parliamentary system of government. However, this change necessitates parliamentary consultation with the people, as per the existing powers vested in the parliament.
