President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the PPM/PNC coalition announced that his administration will send away foreign troops, during an address last night at the Social Center.

In his address, Muizzu expressed his gratitude to the people of the Maldives for their support in the presidential election and shared their collective sentiment regarding foreign troop deployments.

Muizzu stated that a clear majority of Maldivians had voiced their opposition to the presence of Indian troops in the country, emphasising that this did not align with the desires of the Maldivian people. He indicated his intention to communicate this decision to the respective foreign ambassadors, with specific reference to the Indian Ambassador.

Muizzu expressed confidence that the withdrawal of Indian troops from Maldives would take place.

Critiquing the country’s foreign policy, Muizzu highlighted concerns about its heavy reliance on a single nation, pointing out the alarming levels of debt associated with this dependency. He stressed the need for Maldives’ foreign policy to prioritise the interests of the nation itself, indicating a shift towards a more pro-Maldives stance.

Muizzu also expressed his commitment to maintaining close relations with any country that respects Maldives’ foreign policy.

Above all, Muizzu affirmed his dedication to preserving the independence of the Maldives, pledging to take whatever measures necessary to uphold the nation’s sovereignty.
