Drug-Related Offenses Account for 37.5% of Convictions, Aug Stats Show

The Maldives Correctional Service has released its August 2023 monthly statistics, revealing that 37.5% of those sentenced were convicted for drug-related offenses.

Arrivals

During August 2023, a total of 53 individuals entered the prison system. Among them, 40 were sentenced for various offenses, while 13 individuals were in detention awaiting trial.

Crime Breakdown

The types of crimes for which individuals were sentenced in August are as follows:

  • 37.5% were convicted for drug-related offenses, reflecting the persistent issue of substance abuse.
  • 2.5% were sentenced for threatening behavior.
  • 7.5% faced incarceration due to burglary and looting.
  • 7.5% were convicted of child molestation.
  • 12.5% were found guilty of unlawful seizure of property.
  • 15.0% were incarcerated for assault and battery.
  • A further 2.5% were sentenced for various other crimes.

Release

Conversely, during the same period, 105 individuals were released from the prison system. Of those, 68 had completed their sentences, and 37 were released while their trials were still pending.

Details of Release

The modes of release were diverse, comprising:

  • 25 individuals were released after serving their full sentences.
  • 33 who benefited from clemency.
  • 10 granted parole.
  • 37 individuals were released following the overturning of court orders to remand them.
