The Adhaalath Party (AP) has taken a firm stance against adopting a parliamentary system of government, during a meeting held amongst the party, with members unanimously passed a resolution rejecting any change to the current system of governance in favor of a parliamentary model.

This decision by the AP comes at a time when the parliamentary system of government has been highly advocated by the country’s former President Nasheed and his breakaway faction from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) known as The Democrats.
However, the AP’s stance aligns with the MDP, which also confirmed its commitment to the existing system of governance during a meeting held yesterday.
The AP’s endorsement of the presidential system of government was made evident as it received unanimous approval within the party during the assembly held last night.
The debate over the country’s system of governance has been a subject of discussion and deliberation among political parties, with differing opinions on whether to transition to a parliamentary system. While President Nasheed has been a vocal proponent of this change, the AP’s recent resolution firmly opposes such a transition.
