This announcement comes in the wake of Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the current Mayor of Male’ city, being elected to the presidency.
Muizzu is set to be inaugurated as the President of the Maldives on November 17, 2023, which will result in a vacancy in the mayoral seat of Male’ city.
Mahloof took to Twitter to confirm his candidacy for the upcoming by-election to fill this municipal role.
As of now, Mahloof is the sole candidate who has publicly expressed an interest in contesting for the position.
According to the regulations outlined in the Local Government Act, the Local Government Authority (LGA) is required to notify the Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM) within 14 days of a vacancy arising during the council’s tenure. Subsequently, the LGA must conduct the election to select a replacement within 60 days from the date of notification.
