As of now, specific details regarding the content of their discussions have not been made publicly available.
It’s worth noting that President-elect Muizzu previously served as the Housing Minister in the government of former President Abdullah Yameen. During his tenure, development projects were initiated with support from China.
This period saw a closer alignment of the Maldivian government with China, leading to a strain in relations between the Maldives and neighboring India.
However, since the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) assumed power in 2018, there has been a notable shift in the country’s foreign policy. Relations with India have strengthened, while previous affiliations with China have waned.
During his campaign, President-elect Muizzu emphasised his commitment to prioritising the Maldivian people. He has expressed his intention to meet with the Indian High Commissioner in the near future.
