Abdul Raheem Abdulla (Adhurey), the Chairperson of the People’s National Congress (PNC), has assumed the role of director-general of the transitional committee, as appointed by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) on Thursday.

Abdul Raheem’s nomination to this position came from the opposition coalition of PPM and PNC earlier in the week.

He is set to lead the transitional committee tasked with overseeing the transfer of power to the incoming president, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Muizzu emerged victorious in the Maldives presidential runoff election, held last weekend.

Adding to the committee’s composition, Mohamed Firuzul Abdulla Khaleel, a close aide to former Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, was designated as the spokesperson of the transitional committee on Wednesday.

The presidential runoff election, which took place on Saturday, saw Muizzu of the PPM-PNC coalition secure victory with 129,159 votes, constituting 54 percent of the total votes cast.

He defeated the incumbent president, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), who gained 109,868 votes, accounting for 46 percent of the vote share.

The inauguration of Muizzu as the incoming president is scheduled for November 17.
