The education ministry has revisited its decision to shift the A-level syllabus to Cambridge International. In an announcement issued on August 24, 2022, the ministry initially announced that A-level classes would follow the Cambridge International syllabus starting this year, and the Cambridge International A-S level exams were planned for the subsequent October/November.
However, Deputy Education Minister Mohamed Ihsaan, who oversees the Department of Public Examinations (DPE), revealed that the ministry had reversed its prior decision, deeming it inappropriate to shift the A-level syllabus to Cambridge. He explained that students who started their A-level courses last month were instructed using the existing Edexcel syllabus.
Ihsaan also confirmed that schools have been informed that the directive about the syllabus change is no longer in effect. However, some sources reported that several schools asserted they had not received any updates after the ministry’s general directive issued last year.
Ihsaan mentioned that altering the A-level syllabus was intended to facilitate students’ learning. The earlier decision was made since students encountered difficulties adapting to the A-level syllabus due to their prior exposure to the Cambridge O-level syllabus. Consequently, the ministry noted an increased number of students discontinuing their mid-level A-level studies.
