The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has formally announced its intention to present a no-confidence motion targeting Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed.
In a statement issued today, the MDP has confirmed that it has successfully collected the requisite number of signatures to set in motion a no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed.
To oust the Speaker or Deputy Speaker, a majority vote from parliamentarians is necessary. Specifically, if all 87 members are present, a minimum of one-fourth of the members must endorse the no-confidence motion for it to be adopted. As such, the party has submitted the motion, accompanied by the signatures of 22 out of the 87 parliamentarians.
This development follows a prior attempt by the MDP to bring a no-confidence motion against Nasheed. However, the earlier motion was retracted after it was not included on the parliamentary agenda. This coincided with its submission alongside a no-confidence motion targeting Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.
