The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has declared its intention to participate in all constituencies in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for March or April next year.

The MDP, currently holding a majority in the 19th parliament with 65 seats, has expressed its determination to contest every seat in the parliament.

Despite the emergence of The Democrats as a new political force and the MDP seats decreasing to 55, the MDP still retains its parliamentary majority.

The move to contest all seats comes in the wake of their 2023 presidential election’s failure.

With this decision, the MDP is set to assume the role of the primary opposition party.

In light of a growing population, six additional seats have been added to the parliament, bringing the total number of members in the 20th Parliament to 93. The Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has issued an interim report on seat allocation, with the final report expected after a period for complaints and revisions.
