In a statement released on World Mental Health Day, President-Elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu highlighted his dedication to ensuring that mental health becomes a fundamental right for all citizens.

Muizzu firmly believes that every individual should be guaranteed the right to mental health and has outlined a plan to achieve this vision.

Speaking on social media, Muizzu highlighted his commitment to creating a healthy environment and providing unrestricted psychological treatment and support to all citizens.

Muizzu’s promise includes the enactment of a mental health law and the establishment of an international-standard mental health hospital in L. Gan.

The current administration under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also prioritised addressing mental health concerns. It established the National Mental Health Department as an agency under the Ministry of Health and initiated the “Kihineh” national mental health awareness campaign.

Under the current administration, the first mental health treatment center in the country, the Center for Mental Health, was inaugurated at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in March 2019.

This initiative was further expanded, with a mental health center established at the Hulhumale Hospital. The government also facilitated the availability of mental health treatments under the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, and introduced mental health services in five tertiary-level hospitals in the atolls.

World Mental Health Day, celebrated on October 10 every year since its inception in 1992, serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues and ensuring the well-being of individuals within society.
