The Secretariat of the Maldivian Parliament has officially dispatched a notice to Speaker Mohamed Nasheed in connection with the no-confidence motion submitted against him.

On October 9, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) initiated the no-confidence motion with the endorsement of 49 members.

Speaker Nasheed is now obligated to send a formal response to this motion within a 14-day timeframe commencing from the receipt of the notice.

The MDP, wielding a majority within the Parliament, has cited Speaker Nasheed’s actions as obstructive to its legislative agenda as the primary reason behind the no-confidence motion.

The ousting of the speaker or deputy speaker necessitates a majority vote by the parliamentarians. Specifically, if all 87 members are present, a minimum of 44 members must cast affirmative votes in favor of the no-confidence motion for it to take effect. Currently, the MDP holds 55 seats in the Parliament.

It is worth noting that earlier this year, the MDP Parliamentary Group (PG) had put forward a no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla with the support of 50 signatures on May 23, and another motion against Speaker Nasheed with 54 signatures on June 14, However, these motions were withdrawn in September when several members revoked their signatures.

The withdrawal was attributed to logistical challenges arising from the concurrent submission of both motions at the same time.
