Surge in Diarrhea Cases Across Maldives, Reports HPA

According to statistics from the Health Protection Agency (HPA), cases of diarrhea have remained prevalent in the Maldives.

The number of reported cases of diarrhea and vomiting this year has been consistently higher compared to the past three years. Traditionally, there is an increase in these cases from July to August each year, but this August has seen a significant surge, with 10,451 cases reported. In the current month, 7,160 cases have been reported.

The Male’ Atoll has witnessed the highest number of cases of diarrhea and vomiting this year, with 318 cases for every 10,000 people. Additionally, Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu atolls have reported an increase in cases of these ailments.

In addition to diarrhea and vomiting, there has been a notable increase in common colds and viral fever cases throughout the country. The HPA has reported a rise in these diseases in several atolls.

Comparatively, the number of common cold cases this year has surpassed the figures from the previous three years, with the highest number reported in September a total of 39,481 cases.

As of September this year, a significant number of cases of four common communicable diseases have been reported across the country.
