The office of the President-Elect has initiated discussions regarding potential alterations in the provision of utility services within the Maldives following concerns about the financial burdens carried by the four state-owned utility companies—STELCO, FENAKA, Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), and WAMCO.
The President-Elect’s office has voiced concern over the existing debt of these entities and is contemplating strategies to address this issue.
Transitional spokesperson Mohamed Firuzul conveyed that the prospective changes in utility service provisions aims to mitigate hardships for both the public and the state.
However, specific details regarding these potential changes have not yet been disclosed. Notably, the office has clarified that there are no intentions to privatise these state-owned companies.
Firuzul emphasised the necessity for these entities to function as self-sustaining companies rather than relying on state funding.
Speaking on the operational aspect, Firuzul underlined the significance of enhancing the financial and administrative dimensions of these companies. In pursuit of this goal, the office plans to introduce various company policies within an accepted framework.
The imperative need to settle the accumulated debts, particularly those owed to smaller companies, was also highlighted.
Furthermore, Firuzul stressed the prioritisation of completing ongoing projects within the specified deadlines. Delays in project completion contribute to escalated costs, ultimately burdening the companies.
Firuzul also raised concerns about over-employment, primarily pointing out the increase in staff numbers in FENAKA, which provides water and sewerage services across numerous Maldivian islands.
The workforce at FENAKA surged from 2,000 employees in 2018 to a current count of 8,000, particularly since March of the current year. Despite this surplus in staffing, Firuzul confirmed that the incoming President, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, does not intend to reduce the number of employees immediately.
