The distribution of 4,000 flats under the government’s housing scheme has sparked controversy as concerns emerge over ineligible recipients included in the permanent list.
Amidst mounting complaints regarding the fairness and transparency of the selection process, the President-elect’s office has pledged to take action against any irregularities found in the allocation.
The decision to finalise the list of recipients has been met with criticism, with allegations that the compilation lacked transparency and fairness. Following public outcry, individuals protested outside the Planning Ministry, highlighting discrepancies in the allocation criteria and the awarding of points for the flats.
In response to these grievances, an opportunity has been provided for lodging complaints regarding the selection process.
Transitional Spokesperson Mohamed Firuzul expressed concern over the departure from established procedures in such a crucial matter for the people.
President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged the current government to transfer the responsibility of flat allocation to the incoming administration.
Firuzul emphasised that housing is among the top priorities of the President-elect, assuring the completion of ongoing housing projects and the implementation of a solution to address the housing crisis, aligning with the promises made during the election campaign.
The social housing scheme witnessed an overwhelming response with over 20,000 applications for government-built flats. However, public discontent has arisen over the selection of 4,000 recipients seemingly irrespective of their actual living conditions.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the criteria used to assign points to individuals on the permanent list of flat recipients. Permanent Secretary of the Planning Ministry, Zeeniya Ahmed, clarified that points were allocated based on the information provided in the application forms.
