Felidhoo Island Council Reverses Decision on Service Denial Amid Criticisms

MV+ News Desk | November 11, 2023

Felidhoo Island Council has reversed its earlier decision to withhold services from individuals for non-payment of dues.

The council had initially announced on November 1 that it would suspend services to individuals, as well as their spouses and children, until outstanding payments were settled. The decision was attributed to the council’s unsuccessful attempts to recover the owed funds.

However, in a press release, the Felidhoo Council declared the withdrawal of its previous stance. It further outlined a new approach, allowing individuals a three-month grace period to settle their dues. The council intends to disclose the names of those who remain in arrears after this deadline.

The initial decision faced criticism from both the Local Government Authority (LGA) and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). The LGA voiced concern, emphasising the importance of councils making decisions that align with the constitutional rights of citizens.

Meanwhile, the HRCM asserted that local councils lack the authority to withhold services from specific groups.
