President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu, during a visit to the Velana International Airport, asserted that foreign policy decisions are crafted with minimal reliance on funding considerations.

Muizzu highlighted that the shaping of foreign policy is not unduly influenced by financial aspects, expressing the view that funding for projects should not dictate the direction of diplomatic strategies.

Addressing reporters after inspecting the new terminal site at Velana International Airport, Muizzu revealed that he had secured the $80 million during his unofficial visit to Abu Dhabi.

He clarified that this funding was proposed during discussions and represented a new development, with no prior groundwork laid.

Muizzu further disclosed that the Saudi fund had previously allocated $100 million, and he affirmed the readiness to secure additional funds if required for future airport projects.

Muizzu, while acknowledging the progress made by the Bin Laden Group, which has completed 54 percent of the awarded work on the terminal, pointed out that certain crucial aspects were not within the company’s scope.

Among the outstanding tasks mentioned by Muizzu is the construction of a service road connecting all airport operations. He committed to expeditiously handing over the project, estimating a completion timeframe of approximately 10 months.

Muizzu also highlighted the absence of an entrusted party for the duty-free area construction.

Addressing other key concerns, Muizzu stressed the need to enlarge the apron, delegate responsibility for the tourist arrival area, and address the construction of a jet terminal and airport parking facilities.

Muizzu reiterated his commitment to prioritising the completion of the airport project.
