The People’s National Congress (PNC) in the Maldives is making strides in expanding its membership base, with over 10,000 signatures submitted to the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM).

The ruling party, led by President Mohamed Muizzu, who secured victory in the presidential election on the PNC ticket last September, aims to reach 40,000 members by the end of this year.

Under Muizzu’s guidance as the PNC President, the party is actively working to attract new members.

The PNC’s goal of reaching 40,000 members by the year’s end would position it as the second-largest party, trailing behind the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Currently, the PNC, in coalition with the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), holds the second-largest membership.

The PPM, established on October 27, 2011, has 38,704 members. If the PNC achieves its target, it will become the second-largest party, surpassing the 12-year-old PPM.

Former PPM president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom previously urged party members not to switch allegiance to the PNC during the membership drive.

Following a change in power, differences between the two parties escalated, leading Yameen to resign from the party on Thursday and form a new entity called the People’s National Front (PNF).
