Parliament has extended today’s sitting to finalise discussions on the proposed state budget for the upcoming year.
Presiding over the vote, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem sought unanimous approval for the extension, ensuring that all members interested in debating the Budget Committee’s report would have the opportunity to do so.
With 44 members in attendance, the extension of the sitting received unanimous support. This development follows the Budget Committee’s endorsement of an additional MVR 306 million to the initially proposed MVR 49.8 billion budget from the Finance Ministry for the coming year. The committee’s decision was presented in yesterday’s sitting and has now been opened for floor debate.
The approved domestic budget for offices stands at MVR 43 billion, as determined by the Budget Committee.
It is noteworthy that the Finance Ministry has submitted a budget of MVR 49.5 billion for the upcoming fiscal year. Comparatively, the Parliament approved a budget of MVR 42.8 billion last year, signifying a consistent annual growth in the state budget.
