The announcement outlined Nasheed’s decision not to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections, marking a departure from his sustained involvement in political affairs.
Highlighting his most significant achievements, Nasheed underscored his role in shaping a multi-party system and ensuring that the Maldives upholds Islamic values, respects human rights, and guarantees freedom of expression. He stated that these principles are now deeply ingrained.
Reflecting on the challenges he faced, Nasheed recounted experiences of violence, loneliness, and periods of detention, including instances of violence in prison. He notably mentioned the IED attack on May 6, 2021, emphasising that it was a conspiracy aimed at assassinating him.
Despite the adversities, Nasheed expressed gratitude for the positive moments during his political career. He mentioned facing adversity and turning it into success, attributing this to a higher power.
Nasheed, citing his service as the Maldivian president and parliament speaker, emphasised achievements such as establishing a social protection system and taxation system. He acknowledged that progress has been made in these areas.
Concerned about environmental vulnerability, Nasheed expressed sorrow over damage to the environment in the name of development and expressed hope for positive change.
Additionally, Nasheed announced his agreement to serve as the Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Formation (CVF), an organisation formed by Maldives and 11 other climate-vulnerable nations in 2008.
He asserted that he can continue serving the Maldives in this capacity and will officially assume the role in January.
