A 59-year-old Swiss national, Peter Thomas Duss, who was awaiting trial on charges related to suspected cocaine trafficking, has died while in custody at Maafushi Prison.

Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) reported that Duss suddenly lost consciousness in his cell. Following this, he was swiftly transferred to Maafushi Prison’s medical center, where attempts were made to revive him through CPR. Despite these efforts, doctors pronounced him deceased at 4:01 pm on Tuesday evening, as he failed to regain breathing after the resuscitation attempt.

The Corrections authorities informed Duss’ family, the Inspector of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, and the National Integrity Commission about the incident.

Notably, there were no previously documented health conditions reported for Duss by the Corrections, who asserted that the demise of the foreign detainee is under investigation.

This event follows the death of another foreign convict earlier this year, a 29-year-old Bangladeshi national, who was serving a seven-year prison term in connection to a sexual misconduct case.
