The Progressive Party of Maldives/People’s National Congress (PPM/PNC) has decided to reschedule its primary elections originally set for December 23.

This move, aimed at determining the candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections, comes in response to considerations regarding the practicality of holding the primaries on a school holiday.

In a statement released, the PPM/PNC cited the widespread departure of individuals from the country for various reasons during the holiday season as a key factor influencing the decision to postpone. The rescheduled primary elections are now slated to take place on January 20, aligning with the party’s initial plan to hold the primaries in January.

The announcement of the selected candidates is expected in the coming week, following the verification of candidates’ eligibility. The deadline for nominations closed on December 10, with a substantial number of individuals having submitted their candidacy.

The PPM/PNC primary elections are conducted in collaboration with the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and the Maldives National Party (MNP). General members of the party will also have the opportunity to cast their votes in constituencies contested by candidates from the MDA and MNP.

Notably, the party has experienced a surge in membership, with over 10,000 individuals now affiliated with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s PNC. This influx of new members coincided with a notable number of candidates applying for the primary, drawing support from President Muizzu’s base.

The party’s decision to reschedule the primary elections reflects a commitment to facilitating broader participation and ensuring a fair and inclusive electoral process.
