Gasim and Nazim Report Highest Presidential Election 2023 Expenditure

Financial disclosures from candidates in the presidential elections 2023 held in September reveal that Gasim Ibrahim from Jumhoory Party (JP) and Mohamed Nazim from Maldives National Party (MNP) emerged as the biggest spenders on their respective campaigns.

Gasim Ibrahim’s financial statement outlines a campaign funding structure that included a personal contribution of MVR 100,000, MVR 15 million from various legal entities, and MVR 5.4 million from the Jumhoory Party. Additionally, campaign items valued at MVR 5.5 million were provided by the party, bringing the total funds for Gasim’s campaign to MVR 25.7 million.

Personal expenses related to the campaign for Gasim amounted to MVR 100,000, with MVR 20.3 million allocated towards garnering support. The conclusion of the campaign left MVR 85,450 from the funds received.

Mohamed Nazim, the Maldives National Party candidate, injected MVR 700,000 from his personal funds into his campaign. External contributions included MVR 6 million from individuals and MVR 5.9 million from legal entities, resulting in a total campaign fund of MVR 13 million. At the end of the campaign, only MVR 303 remained unspent.

Mohamed Muizzu (People’s National Congress) – MVR 2 million

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Maldivian Democratic Party) – MVR 6.8 million

Ilyas Labeeb (The Democrats) – MVR 2.5 million

Faris Maumoon (Independent) – MVR 1.1 million

Umar Naseer (Independent) – MVR 285,950

Hassan Zameel (Independent) – MVR 16,259.68

In the initial round of voting, candidates garnered varying levels of support, each reflected in their respective vote tallies according to their assigned candidate numbers. Umar Naseer secured 6,343 votes, followed by Hassan Zameel with 327 votes. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih garnered a substantial 86,161 votes, while People’s National Congress candidate President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu received 101,635 votes.

Jumhoory Party’s Gasim Ibrahim accumulated 5,460 votes, followed by Faris Maumoon with 2,979 votes. Ilyas Labeeb of The Democrats earned 15,839 votes, and Mohamed Nazim of the Maldives National Party received 1,907 votes. These numerical representations encapsulate the diverse levels of voter support each candidate obtained during the first round of the presidential election.
