The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed the presence of filariasis cases in Kulhudhuffushi City following a recent screening campaign. The agency reported that foreign workers, originating from regions where filariasis is endemic, tested positive during screenings conducted earlier this month.
According to HPA officials, the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital has taken proactive measures by conducting additional screenings of foreign workers in response to the reported cases. As of now, 17 individuals have tested positive for filariasis.
Further tests are underway to confirm the presence of the disease and initiate appropriate treatment for those who have tested positive. The HPA is actively engaged in discussions with the World Health Organization (WHO) to address and identify any additional concerns related to the outbreak.
Filariasis, a parasitic infectious disease transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes, primarily affects the lymphatic system. Common symptoms include severe swelling of limbs, skin thickening, fever, and pain.
Notably, the Maldives successfully eradicated filariasis as a public health problem in 2007, receiving certification from the WHO in 2016. The recent cases in Kulhudhuffushi mark a concerning development, prompting coordinated efforts to address and contain the outbreak.
