PPM Secures Victories in Council By-Elections

In the council by-elections held yesterday, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) emerged victorious in two out of three islands.

In the island of Maafaru, the by-elections resulted in the election of a councillor and a member of the Maafaru Women’s Development Committee. The PPM clinched both seats, with Mohammed Abubakr, Falhomaage/N. Maafaru, securing the council membership with 239 votes.
The opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, Muslim Mohammed, Dhonke/N. Maafaru, garnered 90 votes. For the Women’s Development Committee seat, PPM candidate Maryam Shathira emerged victorious with 217 votes, while Asrar Hassan, contesting on the MDP ticket, received 113 votes.
Similarly, in the Kelaa election, PPM candidate Khadheeja Maurifa – Hefy/H.A. Kelaa secured the council membership with 402 votes, surpassing MDP candidate Hawa Sudha, Araa-iru/H.A. Kelaa, who garnered 367 votes.
However, in H.A. Hanyaameedhoo, an independent candidate, Mohammed Yasir, Blue Star/A.Dh., emerged victorious with 212 votes, defeating PPM candidate Mohammed Waheed, Finihiyaage/A.Dh. Hanyaameedhoo, who received 169 votes.
