The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has commenced the process of obtaining statements in the ongoing investigation concerning allegations related to the allocation of the initial 4,000 flats under the previous administration’s ‘Gedhoruveriya’ housing scheme.

In a statement released yesterday, the ACC informed the public that the scope of the investigation has broadened since gaining access to the ‘Gedhoruverin’ portal. The commission is currently summoning individuals of interest to provide statements and gather information relevant to the inquiry.

Emphasising the heightened public interest in the case, the corruption watchdog expressed its commitment to concluding the investigation promptly. The ACC stated that it is deploying all available technical and human resources to ensure a comprehensive inquiry.

The official list of beneficiaries of flats under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme was initially disclosed on November 4. This list included individuals set to receive the 4,000 units currently in the process of construction by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC).

Following the release of the list, a group of protesters gathered at the Housing Ministry the next day, expressing dissatisfaction with the alleged unfairness of the assessment process. Protesters claimed that some applicants, who had a shorter residency period in Male’, were awarded higher points, and there were allegations of preferential treatment towards certain lawmakers from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and their family members.

On the same day, responding to the complaints, the ACC directed a suspension of the flat issuance pending the outcome of its investigation.
