In a decision made today, the parliament has opted to extend the ongoing third term until December 28, marking the third extension of the year.
Last month, the initial extension to the third term was granted as crucial tasks, including the approval of next year’s budget, remained outstanding. Subsequently, a second extension was greenlit on December 6, extending the term until December 18.
During today’s session, Speaker Mohamed Aslam proposed a further extension, citing the pending parliamentary vote on the cabinet appointments made by newly inaugurated President Mohamed Muizzu.
The proposal garnered support from sixty-eight Members of Parliament, securing a third extension for the final term of the year.
Speaker Aslam’s decision to seek a re-evaluation of the cabinet appointments stems from concerns about the President’s Office’s failure to submit the revised mandates of ministries for parliamentary approval, as mandated by the law.
Furthermore, the speaker highlighted the inadequacy of details in the committee’s review of the appointments. Acknowledging the validity of the point of order, Speaker Mohamed Aslam redirected the matter to the committee for further review.
