The Maldives Hajj Corporation Limited (MHCL) has opened applications for individuals undergoing treatment for severe illnesses to reserve their allocated quota for the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage.
The decision to reopen this opportunity follows the government’s directive to allocate the entire Hajj quota to the Hajj Corporation. In accordance with this decision, the Hajj Corporation has dedicated 5% of its quota to individuals grappling with life-threatening illnesses.

This shift, from allocating quotas to private companies to entrusting all quotas to the Hajj Corporation, is expected to facilitate the inclusion of a greater number of patients in the Hajj pilgrimage. Specifically, the corporation plans to accommodate 50 individuals facing life-threatening illnesses.
The Hajj Corporation outlined the eligibility criteria for application, indicating that individuals listed on the Hajj space roster until November 9 of the previous year are eligible to apply for a designated allotment. The application deadline is set for the 31st of this month at 14:00 pm. Importantly, those who previously applied for special space in November need not reapply.
Prospective applicants are required to complete the Special Place Application Form designed for those dealing with serious illnesses, available on the Hajj Corporation website. Additionally, applicants must submit their health certificates and a clear copy of their citizenship card.
As of now, more than 6,000 individuals are registered with the Hajj Corporation from the Maldives, with over 4,700 having made payments for the Hajj pilgrimage.
The prolonged queue is attributed to the absence of Saudi Arabian quotas in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a subsequent reduction in numbers the following year.
Acknowledging the issue, the government is engaged in discussions with the Saudi government to secure additional quotas and alleviate the queue. It is anticipated that this measure will lead to a reduction in the current backlog, providing relief to those awaiting their turn for the Hajj pilgrimage.
