The Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament has endorsed a salary increment for parliamentarians, setting their monthly earnings at MVR 100,000, inclusive of a committee allowance.
During yesterday’s session, the committee initially considered raising the speaker’s salary to MVR 90,000, the deputy speaker’s to MVR 88,000, and other parliamentarians’ to MVR 82,000. This proposed structure included a basic salary of MVR 57,000 and a living allowance of MVR 25,000.
After careful deliberations, the committee opted to reduce the basic salary to MVR 55,000, resulting in a total monthly salary of MVR 80,000. This decision received unanimous approval from the committee members.
Consequently, when factoring in the MVR 20,000 committee allowance granted to parliamentarians, their total monthly remuneration will now stand at MVR 100,000.
It is noteworthy that the recently approved state budget of MVR 49.8 billion, passed last week, includes a provision of MVR 500 million earmarked for a salary increase for government employees.
