Today marks the closure of schools across the nation as the first term of the 2023-2024 academic year concludes.
Commencing on August 6th, the academic year witnessed the participation of more than 84,000 students nationwide.
The upcoming break, lasting 16 days and coinciding with government holidays, provides students with an opportunity to recharge before the commencement of the second term on January 17th.
Notably, this academic year sees 156 schools adopting the single-session format as part of the government’s policy, while six schools are following the satellite education format.
The conclusion of the first term occurs amidst an ongoing debate regarding the potential shift of the academic year’s start to January. This topic has sparked a divided opinion within Maldivian society.
It is important to note that such a shift aligns with an electoral pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The discussions around this matter are likely to persist in the public sphere.
