Civil Court Issues Interim Order to Halt Import of Alleged Counterfeit Goods
The Civil Court has issued an interim order preventing another company from importing goods into the Maldives following a plea from CGT Private Limited. CGT accused Exotic Enterprises of importing counterfeit Camel brand cigarettes, alleging fraudulent practices.
In the complaint, CGT stated that Exotic Enterprises brought in goods of the same brand, falsely associating them with CGT’s variants. The complaint also highlighted discrepancies in labels and warnings on Exotic’s imported goods.
CGT asserted potential reputational damage and loss of customer trust due to the alleged import and sale of counterfeit goods from an authorised distributor. According to CGT, Exotic Enterprises imported 200 cases of the alleged counterfeit goods, with 10 cases already cleared.
CGT requested an interim injunction to stop the clearance of the remaining 190 cases. In response, Judge Aishath Azufa Abdul Ghafoor directed Exotic Enterprises not to engage in any transactions involving the imported goods, citing doubts about the authenticity. The Customs authorities were instructed to suspend clearance for unprocessed goods temporarily, and the police were directed to prevent the sale of these goods within the country.
